Official Opening of Recreation Ground Playspace and Outdoor Gym

Come rain or shine – Families enjoying new Great Wakering play area!

A new play area at Great Wakering Recreation Ground has been well received by local children, with exciting equipment designed to encourage them to explore and be adventurous.

Rochford District Council had successfully secured £45k from Enovert Community Trust and added an additional £10k to make the project possible.

This enabled the purchase of new equipment targeted at children aged 2 year to 14 years old, as well as adult gym equipment, which is now being well used whatever the weather!

This is part of a transformation of local playgrounds by Rochford District Council, in a programme which will see up to £1million invested in a number of play spaces over the next three years.

Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Cllr Arthur Williams, said: “I am delighted that Great Wakering play space is open and being actively used by our local children, as I know the community were eagerly awaiting its completion.

“This is part of a programme which will see up to £1 million of investment in play areas across the Rochford District, and it’s great to see young people are really beginning to see the benefit and getting active outdoors.

“I look forward to opening many more play spaces during this three year programme, providing a range of imaginative, active and social play opportunities for our children and grandchildren.”

A spokesperson for Great Wakering Parish Council added: “Great Wakering Parish Council are delighted that this refurbishment to the play space at Great Wakering has been undertaken for the local Community.

“This much improved facility will allow our children to benefit from wider opportunities to socialise, play and be active. The Parish Council would like to thank all who brought the scheme to fruition and the grant funding that made this much needed project attainable.”

Janya Karnganawong, aged 47, from Great Wakering, has been making good use of the adult gym equipment to improve her health and wellbeing.

She said: “I had a stroke in 2015 and was unable to walk afterwards. The team of physios that have been helping me have been great, but they recommended that I also keep active. I now use the equipment here everyday, I love coming here and everyone is so friendly.”

A video about the project is available on Rochford District Council’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.
